USCIS Workload Transfer After Petitions Taking Longer Than Expected

For those waiting on their submitted petition for U.S. Citizenship from the USCIS, you may have to wait longer than anticipated. Recently the USCIS sent out an email to applicants stating some of their cases are taking longer than normal but they are working to address staffing shortages and workload issues.

One of ways they have handled the staffing shortages is to transfer cases work from one center to another. For example, if you had previously filed an I-129F for a fiancé visa with the California Service Center, they may transfer your case to the Vermont Service Center because they have fewer fiancé visas to process. If the USCIS decides to transfer your case, you should receive a letter notifying you that your case has been transferred to another service center.

If you would like to follow your case progress, you can do so by checking your case status online at the USCIS website. If you did not receive a letter notification of your case transfer, you should be able to check when you log into the “Check My Status” tool online. It is important to note that using this tool, while useful, may not be a completely accurate measure of time the USCIS needs to process your petition.
