ESL Teacher Defrauds Students out of Thousands of Dollars

A 58 year old ESL teacher who worked at a Manhattan school has been indicted on charges of defrauding several students out of thousands of dollars in return for providing them with green cards. The defendant reportedly charged between $8,500 and $10,500 per person. The victims hailed from Italy, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines who were living in the U.S. on student visas. The defendant is accused of simply pocketing the money from at least six victims.

While not bothering to apply for green cards on behalf of the students, the defendant allegedly discouraged them from renewing their student visas.

The defendant has been charged with Grand Larceny in the 3 rd and 4th degrees along with a 1 st degree Scheme to Defraud charge. District Attorney Vance remarked, “the defendant allegedly used her position as an ESL teacher to take advantage of students seeking to improve their English by falsely promising that she could obtain green cards for them.”
